Why Should You Replace Your Window Screens?

Even one small hole in your window screen is enough for insects to crawl inside, eliminating the purpose behind the screens in the first place. Enjoying fresh air without worrying about insects finding their way inside your home is a window screen’s tried-and-true purpose. The peace of mind, additional privacy and security window screens add to your daily life can’t be overstated. For no other reason, replacing your window screen will instantly revitalize your home’s curb appeal as well!

How to Fix a Broken Window Screen

If the hole or tear in your screen is smaller than 3 inches, you can repair it relatively easily.

You will just need a screen repair kit (available at most hardware stores). These kits consist of adhesive screen mesh replacement. Just be sure to check the dimensions of the screen pieces in the kit you purchase to ensure it will cover the hole in your screen properly.

Once you have your kit, simply follow the instructions on the package. Most kits do not require any tools, although some may call for a heat source to properly adhere. For these, a hair dryer is usually recommended.

How to Replace or Change a Window Screen

If your screen has a large hole or tear or if it’s coming loose from the frame, it’s best to replace the screen altogether. Repairing large holes or tears is much harder and you may not get a sturdy finished product.

If the idea of replacing a window screen seems daunting to you, it shouldn’t. Believe it or not, learning how to replace a window screen is an easy project! If you have the tools, you can complete it in less than an hour.

What Tools You Will Need to Replace Your Window Screens

  • Awl
  • Scissors or utility knife

  • Screen roller

How to Replace a Window Screen

Step One: Clear a Workspace

Find a large, flat workspace with a sturdy surface and gather your tools. This will allow you to easily work on your window screen.

Step Two: Remove the Old Screen from the Frame

Carefully remove the damaged screen from the window and lay it on your workspace.

Using your flat-head screwdriver, pry the screen spline (the black cord-like piece that secures the screen into the frame) out. Discard the old spline and the damaged screen. Cut your spline (one piece to go around the entire window frame) and set aside.

Step Three: Size the New Window Screen Materials

Unroll the replacement screen and position it over the frame. Pull it tightly so that it goes over the grooves the spline sits in. Cut a piece of the screen, making sure to leave a few extra inches.

Step Four: Place the New Screen in the Frame and Install the Spline

Use your screen roller to push the screen and spline into the grooves, being sure to pull the fabric taut. If you are using a fiberglass screen, you will be able to pull the spline out and reposition the screen, if necessary. If you are using aluminum, the grooves that you make are permanent so you will need to cut a new piece of screen if you make a mistake.

Step Five: Remove Excess Material and Replace the Screen

Using your scissors or utility knife, trim the excess screen from the edges. Place your screen back in your window.
